Jet Lag and Pilot Alertness: What the Research Actually Shows

Jet lag gets talked about like a minor inconvenience, something a strong coffee and a good night's sleep will fix. For frequent travelers that framing mostly holds. For pilots and aviation crew, the research tells a more specific and more consequential story: circadian disruption measurably affects attention, reaction time and decision-making, in ways that matter on the flight deck.

What's actually happening in the body

Your circadian rhythm is your body's internal clock, roughly a 24-hour cycle that governs when you feel alert and when you feel drowsy, regulated largely by light exposure. Crossing time zones doesn't move that clock instantly. It has to re-align gradually, generally at a rate of about one time zone per day for eastward travel and slightly faster westward, according to widely cited aerospace medicine research.

Until that re-alignment finishes, your body is often asking you to be alert during what it still thinks is nighttime, and asking you to sleep when it thinks it's daytime. That mismatch is what shows up as jet lag, and it's also what shows up, more precisely measured, as reduced psychomotor vigilance in fatigue research on aircrew.

One of the more consistent findings in aviation fatigue research is that people are often poor judges of their own alertness in real time, especially under circadian disruption.
